One
for the roadkill - Banned ! UNKLE's "Rabbit in your headlights" has
been judged even more terrible than "Smack my bitch up". But they still
let Lorraine Kelly on the airwaves. Crazy world. - The video for UNKLE's
"Rabbit in your headlights" features an insane man walking through an underground
tunnel being repeadedly mown down by traffic. At the end he tekes off his
coat and destroys the next car that hits me. You won't be able to see it
though, because MTV have refused to show the clip.
"The idea
is obviously controversial", says the video's outraged director Jonathan
Glazer, "which was wy agreed to make certain compromises for MTV. Firstly,
they said they'd show it if we pixelated the collisions and, because so
many people had worked on it and we really wanted it to be seen, we agreed.
And they still refused to show it because the actor playing the madman
was too unnerving and subversive. They won't show the video because the
actor is too good ! What they are saying is anyone on the edge of society
shouldn't be seen on television."
Taking
the ban as the work of mental pygmies, Glazer's final words are worthy
of Thom Yorke himself : "MTV's definition of the "Real world" is four models
living together in a luxury flat", he sneers. "They seem perfectly happy
to show videos featuring models who look like they're on heroin, but the
UNKLE video isn't fashion pain or panto punk. Maybe I should have stuck
the actor in a Stussy Parka." (SELECT)

<<UNKLE
: Psyence Fiction (signé Stéphane Davet) * Ce devait être
un des évènements de la rentrée. [...] On attendait
des aventures inouïes, des voyages visionnaires. On constate un flagrant
manque d'audace. [...]
("Rabbit In Your Headlight").>>

<<UNKLE
: Retour vers l'enfer.
<<UNKLE
: Psyence Fiction.
"Rabbit in your headlights" de son aura.>>

<<tontons

<<It
is the UNKLE album. (signé Craig Mclean) * JUNE 97. San Francisco.
A car winds up through the mountains outside town, deer botling across
the road as it approaches a "recording environment" known as The Site.
Thom Yorke is on the back seat, scribbling down lyrics. He has 48 hours
free-time in the midst of Radiohead's first Americain toure to promote
"OK Computer" and, after meeting James Lavelle in New York earlier that
month at the Tibetan Freedom Concert, has decided to devote his day off
to UNKLE. As they drive, California native DJ Shadow is decribing the local
flora and fauna. "What' that really sweet smell ?" asks Orke. "Oh,that's
Baby's Breath," replies Shasow. "It's a flower with little white puffs."
Up at the studio, Yorke sings of being "a rabbit in your headlights" and
"sweet baby's breath...". (he later decides to remove the local reference).
"this," says Shadow to Lavelle, "is where the heart and soul of the record
begins.">>

Es domingo,
dia 23 y tengo la pulserita que me
permite
entrar en HMV a ver a UNKLE Habia mucha
cola y
escenario.
Yo me dedique a dar una pequeña vuelta
para terminar
al lado derecho del escenario, cerca
del "guest
area". Habia tres manadas de gente
separada
por los estantes de discos, cubiertos de
plastico.
Una gran pantalla detras del escenario y
varias
pequeñas desde donde nos bombardeaban
con imagenes
de los responsables del Psyence, más
artwork
del artista neoyorkino. Y alli estaba Thom en
las pantallas
tambien. Me sente en la barandilla
viendo
empezaba
a llenarse de la gente más variopinta.
James
lavellesalto al escenario pasadas las 23.00.
Tambien
habia visto a DJ Shadow con camiseta gris
y la peririllita.
Tenia ganas de preguntarle que que tal
las sesiones
con Thom. El Mr Mo'wax toco unos 45
minutos
varias remezclas de canciones muy
familiares
via Beastie Boys y tambian del nuevo
disco,
al igual que DJ Shadow. Las grandes y
pequeñas
pantallas iban alternando imagenes live
con las
del disco. Genial. Despues salto al escenario
DJ Shadow,
acompañado de aplausos. Me encanta
este pibe.
Tocaba canciones de su
"Endtroducing"tambian
y...fue
mi momento, cuando
empezaron
los primeros acordes de Rabbits in your
headlights".
Inconscientemente solte un gritito cuando
me di
shows
estaba el pibe responsable del artwork del
disco
pintando al lado del escenario. En total habia
unas 400
Benicassim?y
mirandome con unas extrañas gafas,
me dijo
que le habia gustado bastante. Cuando
llegue
a DJ Shadow me pregunto que que quería que
me firmase...todo
el tiempo me quede en blanco. Le
sonrio.
Psyence
fiction está editado en Mo'Wax / Polygram.

Mo Wax
director Steve Finan makes no bones about
the difficulties
posed by A&M's disappearance. "It's
been very,
very painful and difficult," he says. "I was in
America
doing promotion last week and was having
to get
to know people at Island at the same time as
organising
this huge promotional campaign."
However,
both Lavelle and Finan are determined
these
obstacles will not affect an album which for
Lavelle
represents a chance to lift Mo Wax on to a
new level.
"It's a chance to step up, to reach a whole
new group
of people and to work with a great video
director
[Jonathan Glazer]," he says.
Finan
is dismissive of rumours that the album cost up
to £2m
or went ridiculously over budget. "It's no more
out of
shape than a normal record of this size," he
says.
The whole
marketing campaign, which was eventually
finalised
last week, features a number of typical
twists.
Although destined for a mainstream audience,
Psyence
Fiction will be accompanied by the
extravagant
packaging for which Mo Wax has been
famed.
The album's artwork has been created by
legendary
New York graffiti artist Futura 2000, who
also designed
a set of UNKLE character toys.
Following
the album's release in August, the first
single,
Rabbit In The Headlights featuring Thom
Yorke,
will be released on October 12. The single
package
will feature remixes by Massive Attack and
Sixties
veteran David Axlerod. But, because of its
length,
it will not qualify for the singles chart. Finan
says,
"A lot of the time with Mo Wax we've made a
conscious
decision not to go near the chart. People
who buy
our records want them when they want them
and not
when a record company wants them to."......

Shadow
had met Thom Yorke at a party he had DJ-ed
at in
London in the summer of 1996 and at that year's
Tibetan
Freedom Festival in San Francisco. Yorke's
contribution,
'Rabbit In Your Headlights', was
recorded
in an isolated studio in a forest outside San
Francisco.
"That
track was one of the most rewarding," says
Shadow.
"After he did his vocal he ended up staying
for two
days tuning pianos and laying down extra bass
parts.
The track was built from the ground up." (NME)
Yorke
was another one who had one take that was
perfect
out of the box, DJ Shadow said. "Looking
back,
the lyrics to both songs are certainly about what
both were
going through at the time. It's inevitable," he
added.
The track
Yorke appears on, "Rabbit In Your
Headlights,"
was recorded last fall in San Francisco
while
Radiohead were in town for a show at the
Warfield
in support of their critically acclaimed album
OK Computer,
it and features the vicious line "fat
bloody
fingers are sucking your soul away."
"The last
minute of that song, the way he sings, it feels
like your
hair is being blown back," DJ Shadow said
of the
album-closing track. "It's really emotional and it
was really
special working with him. There's no
histrionics,
it's just right." ..(SONICNET)
LAVELLE'S
UNKLE MAKES AUGUST VISIT
The UNKLE
album, 'Psyence Fiction', featuring
contributions
from Richard Ashcroft, Thom Yorke, DJ
Shadow
and the Beastie Boys' Mike D, has finally
been given
an August 24 release date by Mo'Wax.
Richard
Ashcroft and Thom Yorke recorded their
contributions
before the successes of their 'Urban
Hymns'
and 'OK Computer' albums.
Lavelle
said: "I've always wanted to bring together the
different
types of music that I've grown up on, to
intertwine
them to create something that people my
age can
get into." The Richard Ashcroft song is called
'Lonely
Soul'. The Thom Yorke/DJ Shadow song,
which
was recorded in San Francisco, is called
'Rabbit
In Your Headlights'.(NME)
UNKLE
Thom wrote
and sang the words.
Thom's
collaboration with DJ Shadow on a track
'Rabbit
in Your Headlights' will be part of a
forthcoming
U.N.K.L.E. album 'Psyence Fiction'. It is
doubtful
that the track will be released as a single
from the
album. Promotional copies of the track
(backed
by other tracks from the album) will be
released
to the press on Monday, so expect it to be
heard
on radio stations (Radio One has already
played
it) frequently. The current release date for the
LP to
the public is 24th August. and 17th August in
Japan.
