RADIOHEAD in JAPAN October 2001
04-10-2001 Yokohama Arena Yokohama Japan
ESTACION FINAL 2001
My Iron Lung / Karma Police / Knives Out / Permanent Daylight / Climbing up the walls / Fake Plastic Trees / Dollars and Cents / Airbag / Lurgee / I might be wrong / Pyramid Song / Paranoid Android / Idioteque / Everything in its... -------------------- Lucky / Optimistic / You and Whose Army / How to Disappear --------------- Street Spirit / The Bends / Cinnamon Girl

It's gonna be alright now, we've talked with our parents...").

On the second stop of their summer tour Wednesday at Red Rocks, they held the stage for more than two hours and 22 songs as if to assure fans: Hey, we're OK.
Starting eight months ago with Kid A and continuing with the just-released Amnesiac, Radiohead replaced Thom Yorke's old-fashioned emoting with ambient textures and experimental production. Nearly void of guitars, Radiohead's recent records border on intelligent dance music. Some old-line fans have grumbled that they're void of emotion, too. At a sold-out Red Rocks, though, the band transformed those anti-rock songs into guitar-driven barnburners. They opened with "The National Anthem," a bass-heavy stomper, and then moved into Amnesiac's "Morning Bell" with Yorke sitting at a keyboard. On record, the former is a paranoid scramble, the latter a claustrophobic lament. But the organic instrumentation in the live show recast them as Bends-era statements: Life is lonely, relationships end, let's get on with it.
The whole show was like that - uplifting despite the bleak lyrics, largely because of the invigorated arrangements. When Radiohead's famed three-guitar attack returned, as it did on "Paranoid Android," Yorke got so into his axework that he tripped over a monitor. During the slow-burning "You and Whose Army?," a buoyant, piano-playing Yorke twice glanced over his shoulder at the crowd, as if to say "How d'ya like that, mates?" Here's how much fun Thom Yorke appeared to be having playing rock and roll again: He cracked up laughing during "Exit Music (For a Film)" and hugged a fan before "I Might Be Wrong."
You knew drummer Phil Selway felt equally giddy when he started snapping crowd pictures. Selway was key in translating for the stage songs that were recorded largely with synthetic beats, humanizing the inhuman.
If anyone was introspective it was guitarist Jonny Greenwood, who spent the night behind a two-tiered baker's rack of gear and stood before about three acres of effects pedals.
Radiohead used the body of their set to answer fan concerns that, like the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds, their new and fanatically produced albums would be un-playable live. They used their encores to discourage the idea that they've abandoned their traditional rock roots, reasserting themselves as an organic band. (VH1)

Rockers bring their studio experiments alive with explosive energy By TOM ZILLICH -- For JAM! Music
VANCOUVER -- Officially out of their lengthy "studio" period and into the great outdoors on their current concert tour, Radiohead has some lost time to make up for these days.
The band played only three North American shows in support of "Kid A" last year. In the two years previous, they grew paranoid about finishing actual songs and recording them, for fear of having to go on tour again. Yeah, life sucks when you're one of the biggest bands on the planet.
There seemed to be a sense of payback for the faithful when the Oxford art-rockers strolled onto Thunderbird Stadium's stage Sunday for the first Canadian show on this tour, and quickly tore into the distorto-bass riff of "National Anthem". For the next two hours-plus, Radiohead proved to 15,000 fans that songs from both "Kid A" and "Amnesiac" sound pretty decent live and that, yes, they still like to rock out every so often. So much for being studio rats.
Early on in the 24-song set, munchkin-sized-head 'Head Thom Yorke acknowledged the slowly fading sunlight behind the concert stage. "It'll get dark soon," he promised following a quick version of "Lucky". "So it'll get better."
Wearing a blue "Atari" shirt and pointy-toed leather shoes that made him look even more elfin, Yorke was in command from the start. When he wasn't dishing out dry humour ("on-stage banter, on-stage banter," he mumbled into the mic as roadies hauled out the Rhodes keyboard for "Morning Bell"), the singer was signalling changes to the band with a quick hand gesture or jerking back and forth like a man possessed. It was quite a sight for the couple thousand of adoring fans who managed to scoop tickets to the steel-gated "head zone" in front of the stage.
Unfortunately, this crowd-separation tactic worked to diffuse what energy the typically laid-back Vancouver audience had brought to the show. By the time "Just" soared out of the speakers 12 songs in, the crowd had perked up to reveal some signs of actual movement. It didn't help that the security goons worked to eject anyone even contemplating a quick moshing or crowd-surfing (like the poor guy thrown out during the blissful electronica rumble of "Idioteque").
Too bad the band left behind the custom, 10,000-capacity circus tent used on their European tour last year. (The logistics of touring the thing around North America proved reportedly prohibitive.) I'm still not convinced that "Kid A" and "Amnesiac" are all they're acclaimed to be, but at least Radiohead proved that they still know how to put on a fine show.

As The Sun Sets, Radiohead Rises in Santa Barbara
http://www.virginmega.com/default.asp?aid=5BC
There's some really old country and western tune playing really loud on the speakers. None of us can quite place it, but it fits in perfectly with the "how y'all doin'," ranch-like atmosphere of the Santa Barbara Bowl, where Radiohead were about to perform the final show on the first leg of their North American tour Saturday night (6/30). All of a sudden, the quaint tune hits a shrieking halt, and the sounds of what seem to be the hold message for a nameless wireless communications giant, blare from the monitors. The brief aural assault is puzzling for a second, but when Ed, Jonny, Colin, Phil and Thom stroll on stage, it all makes sense. As the stage lights beam in a pattern reminiscent of the end of Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, the bass line of "The National Anthem" blisters from the stage, and the crowd roars with approval. In their own subtle way, one of the most talked about bands in the world has made their grand entrance.
....Then, something did. "This one's for film stars on a bad day," said Yorke, introducing "Talk Show Host." As the sun started to set during the song, the music's intensity rose like a wave. The crunch was back in Jonny Greenwood's preciously used guitar and the punch returned to Yorke's vocals. Piercing blue lights emerged from the stage, and sporadic strobes injected the crowd with a building energy, which exploded at the song's end. After that, Radiohead never looked back. Trumping each song with the next, the band miraculously came to life, sounding as crisp as they've ever been. Surprisingly, it was material off Amnesiac that resuscitated the night. "Packt Like Sardines In A Crushd Tin Box," with its incessant drumbeat and hypnotic melody, got the crowd screaming and moving like human beings again. ....
Yet, even this wasn't enough. After many bleacher beatings and banshee wailings from the crowd, Radiohead retuned for encore number two, and surprised the hell out of everyone by doing an incredible cover of Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl." Yes, that Neil Young. ...
Radiohead sucker punched Santa Barbara Saturday night. We gladly took the hit. And for a minute there, we lost ourselves

"... Yorke, for his part, seemed more at ease, less self-conscious, than in the past. That is to say, he still looked as if his head was going to explode, but he seemed relaxed about it, shifting and twitching like some electrified gear while guitarist Jonny Greenwood, guitarist-singer Ed O'Brien, bassist Colin Greenwood, and drummer Phil Selway -- the latter two having evolved into a surprisingly fluid, deceptively funky rhythm section -- worked buzzingly around him. ...">>

8/14/01,Boston, MA/Suffolk Downs Race Track
Radiohead pushes buttons
By Jim Sullivan, Boston Globe 8/15/2001.
Radiohead has spent the past several years, and two CDs ''Kid A'' and ''Amnesiac,'' moving away from pop-rock and semiaccessible ideas, pursuing a more intimate, ambient and yet dissonant and often damaged sound. Call them the anti-U2 of today - or, perhaps, the U2 of the mid- late '90s. As with U2 of that time, Radiohead now doesn't sell quite as many discs as it did before art attacked in a big way, but a rabid audience has hung on and cares very much. A sold-out crowd of 25,000 packed Suffolk Downs last night. At the band's request, the first 4,000 fans to arrive at the showwere given wristbands allowing them access to an inner arc; others, some pinned against the barricade, had the rest of racetrack. (Beer drinkers were sequestered in the back.)
It was the English quintet's first area stop in three-plus years. The two-hour show - we left during the first encore to make deadline - was spectacularly, if starkly, staged with a series of horizontal and vertical lighting strips behind the band. Creative, single-color video carried close-up and non-cliched images on either side of the stage. Chemical smoke occasionally wafted across the stage. The sound was crystalline, with the instrumental separation, clarity, and volume in sync and at an A-level. And in the midst of it all was the fragile, pained-looking Thom Yorke: the singer who consciously deemphasizes lead vocals. (Yorke also plays guitar and keys.)
Enigmatic and riveting, calming and chaotic, Radiohead pushed a lot of buttons, beginning with the distorted bass throb of ''National Anthem,'' the fractured tone and drone of ''Airbag,'' and the chiming, atmospheric ''Morning Bell.'' Thematically, angst and alienation were in the air, occasionally sprinkled with anger (a ''Get off my case'' rant in ''Knives Out''). Musically, Radiohead keyed in on texture and jarring arrangement as much as it did melody. Yorke, a bleater, stretched many notes out till the bitter end - singing ''Nothing at aaaalll!'' in ''Street Spirit'' - indulging in the pathos.

.... ''Paranoid Android'' slayed us near the end, and ''Everything in Its Right Place'' closed the pre-encore segment with an electronica fest. Overall, it was a contradictory, though ultimately satisfying, affair. No extraneous prattling to the audience involved. It was dazzling and remote at the same time, a post-modern experience not unlike a concert by one of Radiohead's forebears, Pink Floyd. Shine on.

IndyRock
