Philip Selway, baterista de Radiohead estará actuando
en España durante La Semana Santa, tocando algunas canciones de
su próximo debut en solitario. El concierto será una presentación
conjunta con la artista norteamericana Lisa Germano, que también
ha colaborado en su disco. Lisa, además, interpretará sus
propias canciones, especialmente las que componen su más reciente
trabajo "Magic Neighbor". Junto a ellos, estarán en el escenario
Sebastian Steinberg al bajo y el multi-instrumentista David Coulter.

"NO HEMOS PERDIDO LA INDEPENDENCIA"
- Phillip Selway
En España, Radiohead, se encuentra como
en casa. Los cinco componentes de la banda dedicaron su tiempo a pasear
e ir de compras por el centro de Madrid y, más tarde, lo hicieron
en Barcelona. Phil Selway (batería) asegura que están cansados
a causa de una gira casi ininterrumpida desde el mes de mayo. No suelen
mantener encuentros con la prensa porque, sobre todo, van demasiado deprisa
de un lado a otro. "Ha sido una semana demasiado estresante y ajetreada".
- (IndyRock) -¿Creo que teneís un
buen recuerdo de la presentación de Ok Computer en Barcelona?
(Phil Selway) - Fue un buen concierto y realmente
lo pasamos bien, aunque ahora las canciones están más pulidas
y creemos que el material, sobre el escenario, suena mejor.
- ¿Es cierto que puede haber un nuevo
disco en primavera?
- ¿De verdad?, !Uauuuh¡ No, la realidad
es que estamos escribiendo material nuevo en los descansos de la gira y
lo iremos presentando poco a poco a partir de primavera, pero no se trata
de un nuevo álbum.
- Se ha dicho que hubo problemas con un nuevo
video, "Let Down".
- Si. Lo que paso es que teníamos
unas expectativas que no coincidían con las de la productora de
la grabación y hemos preferido abandonar la idea, por el momento,
para ponernos de acuerdo y llegar a un mejor
entendimiento sobre lo que todos queremos.
- "OK Computer" ha sido el espaldarazo
definitivo a vuestra carrera. Como se ve la evolución de Radiohead,
ahora, desde la perspectiva del éxito?
- La verdad es que nos sentimos muy bien,
porque la música y el trabajo realizado en "Ok Computer" es muy
representativo de los sentimientos e ideas de la banda. No es lo mismo
que en la época de "Creep", que sólo
les gustó a la gente. Ahora también
nos gusta a nosotros. Nos sentimos realmente bien y unidos en lo que estamos
haciendo.
Premios
- En este momento Radiohead esta nomindado
para casi todos los grandes premios de la música. ¿Les sorprende?
- Los premios son importantes, nadie lo duda,
pero para nosotros lo principal es la respuesta del público. Es
la gente la que marca las pautas. Sabemos que la gente nos escucha y que
les gusta, con eso ya es más que suficiente. Eso es lo mejor.
- ¿Ha perdido Radiohead su vocación
de independientes?
- No. Intentamos mantener la independencia a
pesar de la industria y las ventas. Esto, y nuestra evolución, nos
ha hecho perder algunos seguidores, sobre todo entre los primeros fans,
porque no llegan a entender la evolución de la banda. Pero lo importante
es ser honrados y sinceros con nosotros mismos.
- A pesar de que Radiohead no es amante de
los festivales, ¿podrían acudir a alguno de los españoles,
como Espárrago Rock, Doctor Music o Benicassin?
- No huimos de los festivales ni de los grandes
espacios. De hecho hemos estado en Glastonbury. Vendríamos a algún
festival español si nos llaman. Nos encantaría.
- Parece que os gusta especialmente España.
- Si, en Barcelona estamos como en casa. De hecho
estuvimos cinco días en Sevilla cuando preparábamos "The
Bends".

- ¿Habrá algún vídeo
con la presentación de Ok Computer?
- Estamos preparando un documental. Hay una persona
que viene con nosotros en la gira y que graba casi todo. Grabó mucho
de la presentación. Con todo ese material quizas se pueda elaborar
un documental
interesante.
- ¿Qué les parece tener tantas
páginas dedicadas a la banda en Internet?
- Nos gusta y mucho. A veces tienen más
información que nosotros mismos. Podemos ir a los websites para
saber que haremos dos meses después. Lo que en realidad nos gusta
es que hay gente que se dedica a dar los datos informativos y hacer un
duro trabajo, y nosotros podemos dedicarnos a tener una página oficial
más de carácter creativo.
- ¿Habrá una nueva edición
de Ok Computer con Massive Attack?
- Fue una idea, pero hemos estado demasiado ocupados,
tanto nosotros como Massive Attack y no hemos tenido tiempo de poner ideas
en común, aunque es un proyecto que no hemos abandonado.
- ¿Que tal la experiencia de las bandas
sonoras con Romeo & Juliet?
- Estupenda. Nos encantó como el director
utilizó nuestra música mezclada con las imágenes,
fue un gran trabajo. Nos gustaría seguir trabajando en esta línea
pero las giras no te dan tiempo para nada, y estamos abiertos a todo tipo
de sugerencias.
Tour Against Demons
- ¿La elección de grupos teloneros
es algo también perfectamente controlado?
- Es una decisión de la banda. Generalmente
todos estamos de acuerdo en que una banda puede ser la que nos telonee,
aunque en alguna ocasión la elección ha sido de Thom. Es
el caso de Laika. A Thom le gustaban especialmente, aunque la decisión
final es de todos.
- ¿El tour Against Demons parece terminar
en Japón, pero se rumorea que habrá conciertos en otros lugares?
- Si. La idea es continuarla por Nueva Zelanda,
Australia y después Estados Unidos.
- ¿Hay posibilidad de una gira por sudamérica?
- La verdad es que nos encantaría, pero
por el momento la compañía no lo tiene en sus previsiones,
pero estaría bien. Creemos que el público sudamericano es
muy especial. Sería estupendo. Siempre estamos abiertos a nuevos
lugares.

We haven't lost our independence (Phillip selway)
In Spain,Radiohead are like at home.The five
members of the band spent their spare time walking around and shopping
in the center of Madrid and later in Barcelona.Phil Selway(drums),tells
that they are tired after a nearly non-stop touring since May this year.They
give a very few interviews just because they are so busy."It has been a
very stressful and tiresome week".
-(IndyRock) -I guess you have good memories of
the premiere gig of"OK Computer" in Barcelona?
-(Phil Selway) -"Yes,it was a good concert and
we had a great time though the truth is that the new material sounds better
live now."
-Is it true that you are going to release a
new album next spring?
-"Really?!!Whoaaah!!No,We are writing new material
in between tours.We are starting to record the next album from next Easter.We'll
finish touring the States by the beginning of the summer There's not going
to be new material before that."
-There were some problems with the video of
"Let down"?
-"Yes.What happened was that we had certain expectations
that didn't coincide with the ideas of the producers and we prefered to
leave it for the moment until we all agreed."
-"OK Computer" has been like the milestone
in your career.How do you see the evolution of the band from the success
point of view?
-"The truth is that we feel great because the
music of "OK Computer" represents very well the ideas and the feelings
of the band.It's not the same as in the "Creep"-era,the only thing people
liked.Now WE like it as well.We feel very confident in what we are doing."
-You have been nominated for many awards.Does
that surprise you?
-"Well,the awards are important but for us the
main thing is the response of the people,our fans...We know that people
like us and that is more than you could ask for.That's the best thing."
- Have you lost your independence?
-"No,we try to maintain it no matter what the
industry and the sales say.We've lost some of our first fans because they
don't understand the musical evolution of the band.But the most important
thing is to be honest with ourselves."
-You are not very keen on doing festivals but
could you possibly come to play in some spanish ones like Esparrago Rock,Doctor
Music or Benicassim?
-"It's not that we evade from the festivals.In
fact we did Glastonbury.We'd love to do any spanish festival."
- It seems like you especially like countries
like Spain.
-"Yes,in Barcelona we feel like at home. Actually
we were 5 days in Seville when we were doing "The Bends".

-Is there going to be any video of the presentation
of "OK Computer"?
-""Well,when we were in Barcelona,we had a documentary
maker with us and he's been following us around.He's got a lot of footage
of the Barcelona gig,the UK tour and the US one.Considering that Barcelona
was where we launched the album and it's been a an important part in the
life of "OK Computer" ,yes,eventually we'll make a documentary about it."
-What do you think of having so many webpages
dedicated to the band?
-"We think it's cool.What we really like is that
people take the time of giving all that detailed information while we can
have an official page which is more on the creative side."
-Is there going to be a remix of "OK Computer"
by Massive Attack?
-"There was talk about it at some point and we'd
like it to happen but we've been too busy and they've been very busy so
unfortunately they can't record it yet but we have some remixes of the
album of "Climbing up the walls".We had the Fila Brasilia mix and also,Thom
has been working wth DJ Shadow.He did these U.N.K.L.E. tracks while we
were in the States so I think it's going to be released next year and the
whole process of working with him and his approach to the technology in
a very musical way was very fascinating for Thom."
- Are you planning to do any other soundtracks
like"Romeo&Juliet,"The Velvet Goldmine"..?
-"There are no plans at the moment because we
are very busy with the touring but we are open to any offers.Having a track
copmmission in "Romeo&Juliet",working on that film was a very interesting
thing to do and it was used very effectively in the film."
- When do you finish touring?
-"This year we are finishing up in the UK mid
November and again next year until May."
-What did you think about the Wembley gig?
-"I think we've always been aware of playing
larger places and inevitably you are going to lose some of the intimacy
of the performance and we thought(in Rotterdam) some people were probably
not going to moved by it to certain extent but it didn't seem to seem to
be the case there.Everybody seemed to be drawn in ...and we apparently
enjoyed the experience.
-How do you pick your support bands?
-"We picked two bands that we really liked and
were really interested in.We have toured with Sparklehorse before,a band
which has had an influence on us.It's got to be a band that you really
feel comfortable with.In the UK we had a band a band called Laika,one of
Thom's choices.
-What did you think about the Brixton Academy
gig?
-"It was a very strange gig for us.Actually that
whole UK tour was very strange for us.We were maybe taken aback about everything
progressing so fast in the UK and to come to terms with it,but things seemed
to go down well."
- More touring next year?
-"Japan,Australia,New Zealand and then back to
America.
- Going to South America?
- "Not with this album but at some point,yes."
