The Unbelievable truth

    Heydeeho, Cap'n Tarpals.
I've returned all fresh and a-buzz from my extracurricular 10 days, I thought I'd just tell you about what it all was. After a time-consuming but enjoyable trip to Toronto for my friend Emm Gryner to do a couple of T.V. shows, we headed for Boston for the gigs that I was to play on. Now these things were a totally new experience for me. They're called Living Room Shows (pretty self-explanatory, huh), and apparently they're getting quite popular in the States. So a fan of whoever (Emm in this case) e-mails a bunch of friends and puts on a gig in his or her living room. And that's it. Me and Emm turn up with an electric piano and an acoustic guitar, and sit at the end of the room and play a bunch of songs. It sounds weird, but believe me, it's a great experience. For starters it's (obviously) incredibly intimate, but it's also as much about the music as any gig could possibly be. Nobody's there to get drunk or have a crazy night out with friends, each and every one (about 15 at the shows we played) is there to hear good songs well played in their purest form. We even had a support act, Jessica Weiser, you can find out about her on the net, but I regret I don't know exactly where. Emm herself is stunning. I'd only heard her records prior to this, but live she is a gobsmacker, she has a truly amazing voice, is a wonderful piano player, and it was an honour to guitar on her songs. She insisted that I do some singing as well, so I struggled through Forget About me a couple of times, and also did A Name from WSAYO?, a song of mine called The Everlasting Mile that I did at The Bully gig, Hurry Please Hurry, and My Funny Valentine (for Valentine's day). Emm sang Be Ready rather wonderfully at all the gig's also. Do find out more, and maybe think about buying her last CD Science Fair (she's currently working on a new one) at http://www.emmgryner.com/. You can also read (and hear) her journals, with her view on the whole party.
At the end of my time away I also had time to pop in on Mark Mulcahy who is close to finishing his new album (apparently the working title is 'The Great Wall of Mark Mulcahy'). I played some very sparse shaker on a new track called Wake Up Whispering, and then, as the hour grew late and the vibes grew loose me, Mark and a friend of his called (I think) Chris Harford had a go at a couple of songs from scratch, first a cover of Moonbeams by the great Harry Nillson, and then a completely new Mark song bordering on the rockabilly. In the cold light of day I doubt the latter two will ever make it out to the public in any form, but they were way fun to do, even if it did mean only getting 1 1/2 hours sleep before I had to get up to catch my plane home. I'll write more when I'm not so tired, but a couple of things to float out to the great mailing list opinion mill. First, I had half a notion that when Emm is over here next as part of her 'day job' (she sings backing vocals for David Bowie) that I might try and convince her to return the favour by helping me out on the living room shows that I'm vaguely thinking of doing. I kind of enjoy getting out there and singing a bit and playing some of the songs I've written that UBT haven't used... what say you? The other thing is a bit of a moral dilemma. Given our current well documented situation, it may be hard to get out and do gigs, particularly outside of the U.K. We've been offered a pretty good deal to headline a fifteen date tour of France in May, but the dilemma is this: it's sponsored by a tobacco company, Chesterfield. It's hard to weigh the desire to get out and play to people who want to hear us, and the responsibility of not wanting to condone a habit that is proven to cause cancer and heart disease, particularly not wanting to promote it to young people. Well, I don't know. If any of you out there have any suggestions for cool labels in your home country that we should find out about (if you can find phone numbers, all the better), post them up as well. Time for some sleep, methinks.

: Did they sorted out things for the release of the album ? : You saying Andy will go back to study russian politics is not very optimistic...
they got dropped by Virgin. but they get to keep the album. they might release it on shifty disco instead.
their A+R man was scum. he was a fucking idiot. he messed up my brothers life for a while leaving them all dangling on a piece of string for almost a year while he told them how much he hated them. if i ever meet him face to face i will punch his lights out.
andy si much happier now they have been released. and i await my revenge. >>
We've decided to go ahead with the Borderline show (who knows if any tickets are sold, or if we'll sell any), this is the only date we'll do until something is firm on the album, hope to see those of you who are near enough down there.
    Nigel
P.S. it's on Thursday 2nd March. I just read that back, and I did type it correctly.(30 Jan 2000)
    .
A brief update on my hasty message of yesterday. The Borderline gig may still go ahead. We're going to take a couple of days to decide (and see if anyone is buying tickets now that they're on sale), but we've been rehearsing, and (forgive the lapse in modesty) we are sounding much better than we have ever done. If we feel confident about it, we'll go ahead and do that and hopefully a few other gigs. We've already begun approaching other labels, the feedback so far has been encouraging. Thank you for all your messages of support. More news as it breaks. Nigel (27 Jan 2000)

Hello all.Virgin have dropped us. Sorry to bear bad news, but that's the way it is, we only found out a couple of hours ago. The immediate effects of this are, of course, there is no release dates for anything, and we're going to cancel the Borderline gig. I will write more later, but to add a silver lining right now they have given us the completed album to do with as we will, so it still seems likely to me that it will get some kind of release. Nigel

From: Nigel Powell Sent: Wednesday, December 22, 1999
By way of a vaguely happy Christmas type thing to y'all, here's some news, that may or may not turn out to be true through no fault of ours. The new Unbelievable Truth album 'Whose Side Are You On?' is due for release on April 3rd 2000, preceded by a single, 'Agony', on 20th March.
This is what Virgin have told us , but they've lied before, and these things do have a way of getting shifted about anyway. Hopefully we will be touring from the beginning of February, although the only confirmed date so far is a headline at The Borderline in London on March 3rd. Initially we are hoping to be out supporting some other band, but again given our success at getting support slots last time around, you just never know. More news as it comes in.
Happy Christmas and a Merry New Year, one and all!!!

    Unbelievable truth nuevo album
< I know it's a question that's been asked in this forum before, but since
it's closer to the time and the situation is now clearer, I thought I'd run it up the flagpole encore une fois. We've ended up with lots of songs for this album (etc.), and in order for them all to be released, at least here in England where the chart rules are only two b-sides and three formats per single and we are signed to a major label who wouldn't
accept a non-chart eligible single, we are looking at the likelihood of doing multiple formats for each single. Actually, since nowadays to have
a three track single basically means a CD single, we would have to release each single as a three CD set each with two new b-sides. So what's the story people? Is it conning the fans? If it is and we don't so that, how are we going to get these tracks to the people (like you), given that our money grabbing record company, having spent many thousands getting the things recorded and finished, won't give them away for free as MPEGs on the website? If we keep the price to 1.99, is six pounds for seven tracks very much over the odds? What opinions have you?
And on similar lines, what about albums and their length. Do you want as
many tracks as can fit on a CD? Or something put together to be listened
to from start to finish, and for that reason necessarily shorter? Not so
vital this one, just interested.
Post soon, Nigel >>
Sunday October 3rd Nigel Powell (from The Unbelievable Truth apparently) + plus guests The Bullingdon Arms, Cowley Road Oxford.

SAT 24th MARK MULCAY THE POINTDefinitely one to be seen at, this. Mark is a New York singer, and former Miracle Legion frontman (contemporaries of REM in the late 80s). On his own, Mark is closer to the likes of Jeff Buckley and Elliot Smith, with grainy songs about obsession and stuff; new album 'Fathering' has been getting rave reviews in the national press, from NME to Mojo. For his brief UK tour he'll be backed by the Unbelievable Truth, which should make this Oxford date all the more special.(Nightshift)
"Hello,
Just to say, Jim is very much still around and will be playing on the next tour with us. The more astute of you may have noticed, however, that he's a great guitarist who, er, "dabbles" in the keyboard arts (ref the look of fierce concentration and the beads of sweat whenever he's required to lunge in that direction...). That, and the fact that many of the arrangements on the new album have become a bit more intricate, mean that Jim will now concentrate on guitar, and we will (hopefully) be getting someone else to play keyboards on the road.
More news as it breaks, as always...
Nigel"
.Unbelievable Truth enregistrent actuellement leur deuxième album. Pour ce qui est du contenu : "Landslide", "Shed your skin", "Who's side are you on?" (trois titres joués régulièrement lors des concerts) et "From this height" (le titre bonus de l'édition japonaise de "Almost Here") seront sur le prochain album ou des b-sides de celui-ci(L Boisnard)
<< Hello everyone,
Sudden urge to reply.
>From This Height - could well be a b-side for the UK during the next album, or something like that, so that it's a bit more easily accessible. [...] Most of the mp3/live stuff is being or has been recorded for the new album, so, providing everything is groovy in the corporate world, they will appear on the album or as B-sides. [...] Sorry. I may seem random. We're in the studio. We're recording. I think it sounds good. I'll try and find time for a more complete diary presently.

+SPIN : "Unbelievable Truth Almost Here (Virgin) It's bleak, it's melancholy, and it's not Radiohead -- it's Thom Yorke's brother's band! But frontman Andy asserts his independence with a more acoustic sound and lyrics far removed from android paranoia."
