The name inspired by the Hal
Harley films of the
same name
Sam Richards talks to the up 'n' coming Oxford group
about literature, playing live, and what you learn when you're Thom Yorke's
brother
Who are you?
Andy Yorke (vocals/guitar), Nigel Powell (drums/keyboards/guitar/vocals),
Jason Moulster (bass/vocals)
Why the name?
Nigel: "It's a Hal Hartley film. He's my favourite
director and I think that the way he manages to produce great art without
resorting to obscurism is something we strive for in the band. Plus the
name saved us from being called Dogweed or something."
What are your other influences?
Andy: "I'm really into a writer called Russell Herman
and the American hand Hahn Largo. The song Higher Than Reason is actually
about my obsession with these two influences and how it can be very disenchanting
when you realise that you've been relying too much on books or music to
take you away from reality"
How did you get together?
Andy: "l started writing songs when I spent 1993
in Russia as part of my degree course. I had known Nigel since school and
he was playing in a band with Jason so we started to make music when I
returned home. Unfortunately, I was really lacking in self-confidence at
the time and the idea of playing in a band for a living seemed disasterous;
I disappeared back to Moscow. When I finally returned to England for good
in 1996, the pressures had lessened, so we reformed."
How did you get signed?
Nigel: "Virgin were actually interested in us since
before Andy chickened out and went to Moscow. When we reformed, they were
first to get involved again."
Was it an advantage to be based in Oxford?
Nigel: "A lot of record companies use regional promoters
or journalists as scouts and if you impress locally, word will eventually
filter back to London. It helps if there's a thriving music scene, which
is true in Oxford's case."
How do you approach playing live?
Nigel "We actually started as a songwriting project.
I'm a bit of a studio hnffin so we were recording songs before we attempted
to play live. We avoided the typical band sound because there was no rehearsal
studio where we all thrashed around at volume until a song was formed.
Our sound is sparser and more controlled because we were writing quietly
and acoustically right from the very beginning."
Andy: "We've always chosen very appropriate bands
to support and venues to play, so we've never really suffered at the hands
of an audience wanting a big rock concert." Nigel "We're not natural entertainers,
but we tend to lose ourselves in the music and can hopefully translate
that emotion to the audience."
What have you learnt from Radiohead's success?
Andy: "I'm prctiably a lot less naive than I would
otherwise be about the music industry The way they protrayed Thom as this
tucked up character around the time of The Bends, as though they were waiting
for him to be the next Kurt Cobain... That was really sick. It's definitely
made me more cynical about the media."
What advice would you give to new bands?
Nigel: "I've been in lot of bands, and i think
the reason I've finally found some measure of success with Unbelievable
Truth is, ironically, that we never set out to chase fame. If you concentrate
on the songs, the right things will happen at the right time. Be patient
and play to your strengths.".
