(IndyRock) Desde hace unos años, Carvin Jones, ocupa escenarios
europeos con una cierta frecuencia. ¿Cree que España puede
ser un buen territorio para su música?
(Carvin Jones) Si, ya es un mercado bueno porque ya tocamos en muchos
de los festivales grandes en España y a la gente le gusta, así
que seguimos viniendo.
¿Parece que el blues vuelve a estar en las preferencias de
los jóvenes. Es quizá una necesidad de volver a las raices?
Siempre hay una necesidad de volver a las raices porque allí
es donde todo empieza y no te puedes alejar de las raices. Son el comienzo
de todo y el fundamento del cual todo surge.
¿Cómo se siente al recordar que mitos como Eric Clapton
dijese que Carvin Jones era un joven a tener en cuenta, o que Buddy Miles
le calificase como El nuevo rey de las cuerdas?
Es increible cuando tus idolos te hacen un cumplido. Eso es el cumplido
más grande de todos. Es maravilloso, una cosa maravillosa.
¿Prefiere la cercanía con el público en salas
pequeñas y giras por carretera, más que los grandes conciertos
en estadios y festivales?
Ambos, ¡hacemos ambos! Tocamos en los sitios pequeños
tanto como en los grandes. Y es lo mismo porque la reaccion es la misma
y esa es es la parte importante. Que muevas a la gente, que los exites.
La esencia del blues es sentimiento y cercanía. ¿Cree
que la industria ha puesto fronteras a la libre creación?
Si, siempre lo hicieron, sabes, pero solo te pueden parar si los dejas.
Así son las cosas. Solo te pueden limitar si dejas que lo hagan.
Yo, por ejemplo, no dejo que me limiten. No en lo que hago ni lo que digo
ni lo que toco.
En su música se aprecian influencias de BB King, Eric Clapton
y Jimi Hendrix. Pero se respira un cierto aire de rock and roll salvaje.
¿aún se siente rebelde?
Sí, si lo quieres poner así, he sido un rebelde toda
mi vida. Sabes, toco lo que yo quiero y en el mejor de los casos a la gente
le gusta . normalmente le gusta y esa es la parte buena . Hago un poco
de Blues, un poco de Rock 'n Roll un poco de Jazz. Un poco de todo .
Creo que la guitarra, de jovencito, le salvó de caer en situaciones
peligrosas y le ayudó a salir del esquema del "no future".
Si, había un monton de tios cuando you era pequeño que
se metieron en grandes problemas con el alcohol y las drogas, robando y,
sabes, yo siempre estaba dentro de la casa tocando la guitarra y eso me
mantuvo alejado de los problemas, seguro. Y temgo que agradecer a mi abuela
por comprarme mi primera guitarra cuando tuve unos 10 años, y con
ella sigo desde entonces.
¿Estas enamorado de una Stratocaster?
Estoy enamorado de tocar musica, quiero decir, por casualidad uso una
Stratocaster cuando me lio a hacer un blues, me entiendes?
¿Aún es posible sentir emoción al salir al escenario
cuando se han dado más de 3.000 conciertos?
Pues si, aun me llena el escenario y hacía finales de 2007 habremos
hecho unos 5000 conciertos y aun sigo
Creo que habrá una extensa gira de Carvin Jones, en noviembre
en España
Ah sí,¡España prepárate! Carvin Jones vendrá
a una ciudad cerca de ti, Créeme .
(IndyRock) For the last few years, Carvin Jones is appearing on
the european stages frequently. Do you think Spain could be a good territory
for your music?
(Carvin Jones) Ah, yes, it's already a good market because we've already
played in a lot of the major blues festivals thoughout Spain and the spanish
people they love it and that's why we keep coming back.
Blues seems to be on it's way back to popularity among the young.
Is there a need for going back to the roots?
There always is a need to go back to the roots because that's where
it all begins and you can never get away from the roots. Because that's
the beginning of everything, that's the basis of what it all came from.
How does it feel to think about a myth like Eric Clapton saying
that Carvin Jones is the next bluesman to take into account, or that Buddy
Miles called you the new king of the strings?
Ah man, it's realy great when your idols make a big complement about
you, that's the highest complement you could posibly get. It's beautiful,
it's a beautiful thing.
Do you prefer being close to the crowd on a club stage and trave
the roads, rather than big concerts in stadiums and festivals?
Both, we do both! We play the smaller clubs, we play the big venues.
And it's the same because the reaction is the same and that's the important
part. That you get the people movin', you get the people excited.
The esence of blues is feeling and contact with the listener. Do
you think that the record industry is putting limits to free creativity?
Oh yes, they always have, you know, but they can only stop you if you
let 'em. So you know that's just the way it goes. People can only put a
limit on you if you let 'em. Like me, I never let anybody put a limit on
me. On what i can do or say or play.
There are apperent influences from B.B.King, Eric Clapton and Jimi
Hendrix in your music. But there is an air of savage rock 'n roll too .
Do you still feel you are a rebel?
Yes, if you wanna say that, I've been a rebel my whole life, so, you
know, I play what I want and hopefully other peole like it . they usualy
do and this is the good thing so . I play a little bit of blues a little
bit of rock 'n roll a little bit of jazz . A little bit of everything
.
It seems the guitarr saved you from getting into troubble when you
were a kid and kept you away from the 'no future' scheme .
Oh yes, because there was a lot of guys comin' up when I was little
that were getting into big time trouble with drugs and alcohol, robbin'
things and so you know I was always in the house playing the guitar so
that kept me out of troubble, big time. And I appreciate my grandmother
for buying me my fist guitarr when I was like 10 years old, and that's
where it's been ever since.
Are you in love with a Stratocaster?
I'm in love with playing music and perform it, I mean, I just happen
to use a stratocaster when I jam the blues you know what I'm sayin' .
Is it still possible to get hit by the emotion entering the stage
after more than 3000 shows?
Well hey, I still love to perform, I love to dance and by the end of
this year 2007 it will be almost 5000 shows and I'm still excited, I was
excited then, I'm excited now and I will be excited for years and years
to come.
I think there is a big Carvin Jones tour coming up in november ...
Ah yes, so Spain get ready. Carvin Jones is coming at a town near you,

Biografía
Carvin Jones nace en junio de 1966 en Lufkin (Texas). Aunque son muchos
los artistas que han influido en su formación, se podrían
destacar figuras como Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan o Eric Clapton,
entre otros.
"Mi abuela me compró mi primera guitarra, porque siempre se
la pedía prestada a mis amigos y me hacía el remolón
cuando me pedían que se la devolviese. Así que me llevó
a la ciudad y me compró la guitarra. Nunca olvidaré ese día",
nos comenta Carvin. "Vivía en una parte de la ciudad realmente violenta,
donde se cometían asesinatos, se producían tiroteos... y
la guitarra me mantenía alejado de todos esos problemas, ya que
siempre estaba en casa tocándola".
Después del instituto y de haber realizado algunas actuaciones
por Texas, decidió cambiar de aires y en 1989 se trasladó
a Arizona, a la casa de sus tíos en Phoenix. "Mis tíos me
acogieron y a ellos les debo todo mi éxito, si no hubiese sido por
ellos, Carvin Jones no existiría".
Durante aquella época, desempeñó varios trabajos.
"Era el día de la Epifanía y los habitantes de Phoenix recordarán
que el termómetro marcaba casi 40º. Trabaja en una obra de
albañil y no había sombras, ni árboles, y a los chicos
se los llevaban desmayados en ambulancias. Entontes me dije, me niego a
continuar de esta forma, me voy a romper los cuernos para tocar la guitarra
y no tener que seguir haciendo esto"
A partir de marzo de 1991, la banda comenzó a tocar sin descanso,
casi todas las noches de la semana. "La gente empezó a comentar
que éramos muy buenos", dice Carvin. Y en marzo del 2000, Carvin
llegó a la actuación número 3.000.
Su trayectoria y fama aumentaban y empezó a actuar con gente
como Santana, BB King y Albert King, recorriendo Europa en 1998.
En enero de 2001, La revista Guitarist le consagra como uno de los
50 mejores guitarristas de blues que jamás hayan pisado la tierra.
A partir de marzo de ese mismo año, Carvin Jones participa en
los eventos más importantes de blues de Europa junto a los artistas
más destacados del panorama como, Buddy Miles, John Hammond, Jeff
Beck, Gary Moore, Ten Years After,Larry Carlton,Steve Lukather (Toto),The
Animals,Colosseum,Jimmy Vaughan,Tommy Castro,Bryan Auger,Counting Crows,Pino
Daniele,etc....
Durante el verano de 2002, Jones recorre Europa con la formación
musical Ten Year After y toca con su banda junto a Joe Cocker y Zucchero.
